April Schermann STEM Scholarship
Thanks to a gift from Ms. April Schermann, an ISU alumna and local STEM teacher, the April Schermann STEM Scholarship provides a $1,500 scholarship to a deserving STEM major at ISU.
Congratulations to our 2022 Scholar, Benedicte Kazigwa!
Benedicte is a student in ISU's School of Information Technology. She is actively involved in We Lead and the NextSTEM Scholarship program. She states, "Not only do these programs increase my involvement in STEM ... They also help me improve my sense of inclusion as a person—especially as a woman of color in STEM ... By sharing my story, I hope to be able to provide women who are considering careers in STEM a fresh viewpoint."
Eligibility
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:
- be majoring in an undergraduate degree program in one of the following academic units:
- School of Biological Sciences
- Department of Chemistry
- Department of Geography, Geology, & the Environment
- Department of Health Sciences
- School of Information Technology
- Department of Mathematics
- Department of Physics
- Department of Technology
- be a current sophomore, junior, or senior at ISU
- have a minimum GPA of 3.0
- demonstrate financial need
- demonstrate sophisticated understanding of the importance of women in STEM disciplines
- not have received the April Schermann STEM Scholarship prior to this application
- submit a complete application by 11:59 p.m. on October 1
Application Details
The scholarship application will request the following information:
- Name, @ilstu.edu email, UID
- Current cumulative GPA
- Major
- Expected family contribution
- Family income, as stated on last year's tax return
- Number of people in household
- Explanation of extenuating financial circumstances
- Application essay (300-500 words) describing the importance of women being fully represented in STEM disciplines and any outreach or advocacy the applicant has engaged in to make STEM fields more equitable and diverse.
Applications for the April Schermann STEM Scholarship are closed for the 2022 cycle and will reopen in May, 2023.
